Folkestone and Hythe Lib Dem member Tim Prater said on Saturday evening:

"Obviously our first thoughts are with friends and family, especially his wife Jane and their children and grandchildren. But the entire Lib Dem family is sad to hear this news - Paddy was an inspiration to a political generation.

"A phenomenal fighter, and always at 100% drive. Such a loss, not just to the Lib Dems but to politics as a whole.

"People often say they want politicians that have done other things, that had more about them. He had that, in spades. You'll be missed Paddy."

As a tribute to his memory, the Liberal Democrat History Group have reprinted on their website in full the chapter on his time as leader from their 2015 book, British Liberal Leaders.

We hope this may help to explain to those readers who did not know him why he is remembered with such respect and affection.

Rest in peace, Paddy.
